Guide to Choosing Golf Clubs
Choosing a set of golf clubs is a very important part of maturing in the game. You should consider many different things when buying clubs. If you are very thorough in your search for the right golf clubs, you will be glad that you took the extra time and research to find out the information needed in choosing your golf clubs.
First familiarize yourself with the types of golf clubs that you need. There are 14 clubs total for each golf club set. They can all be categorized as irons, woods, or putters.
Irons
Irons are the ones that are used for very distance specific golfing work, and the distance is determined by the size and weight of the head. Irons have a flat angled face and a shorter shaft than a wood. They are designed for shots approaching the green, or over and through trees, or hitting the ball out of hazards.

High-loft irons are called wedges. They have a higher loft than a 9-iron, which is typically lofted at about 44 degrees. There are usually four types of wedges with lofts ranging from 48° to 60°. There is a pitching wedge (PW - 48°), a sand wedge (SW - 56°) and the lob wedge (60°- LW). At 52°is a Gap Wedge, Approach Wedge, Dual Wedge, Attack Wedge or Utility Wedge. There is also a Chipping Wedge at 64° which has the most loft you can legally have on a wedge,
Woods
Woods are used to achieve very large distances with a slightly lower accuracy level than irons. They have a large head and a long shaft for maximum club speed. Hybrid woods are a cross between a wood and an iron, giving these clubs the wood's long distance with the iron's familiar swing.

Putters
Putters are a special class of clubs with a loft not exceeding ten degrees, designed primarily to roll the ball along the grass, generally from a point on the putting green towards the cup. Putters are used for shorter strokes, and strokes that require a higher level of accuracy than the other clubs can provide.
If you are just getting started with golfing, then you probably won’t want to buy a full golf set. A better idea may be to buy adjustable clubs that can you change into different types. This way you may be able to by with 5 or 6 clubs instead of the 14 clubs. This way you keep your costs down and have fewer clubs to carry. You will be able to tweak your adjustable clubs to perfection after you purchase them. This way you will get a feel for your needs when it comes to the specific statistics of the club. Once you have decided on certain settings, you may decide to buy golf clubs that are permanently set. Until then, you should be fine with adjustable clubs.
Graphite is something that many golfers are split on. The advocates of graphite say that it is lighter, easier to swing, and allow for more powerful strokes. There are many who disagree with graphite and prefer steel golf clubs. They believe that graphite clubs are unnecessarily expensive, without any noticeable benefits. Some prefer the stiffness of steel over the comparatively flexible graphite clubs.
Until you are an advanced golfer, you won’t have to worry about things like spin and head weight. The best thing you can do as a beginner is to familiarize yourself with all aspects of the game, and become skilled with the equipment that you already use. You will be glad in the future when you have not wasted money on equipment that is far more fancy and technical than you could need.
